Star Wars Outlaws: Inspired by the Epic Worlds of Ghost of Tsushima and Red Dead Redemption

Ubisoft's legacy of expansive open worlds is well-known, but the inspiration behind their works isn't always drawn from their past successes. In the case of Massive Entertainment's work on Star Wars Outlaws, the creative sparks actually came from a different source altogether.

According to an interview with creative director Julian Gerighty, Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima had a significant impact on the direction of Star Wars Outlaws. Gerighty noted that his key reference point was Ghost of Tsushima, highlighting its roots in Kurosawa's cinematic style rather than the Western genre that inspired George Lucas for Star Wars.

Alongside Ghost of Tsushima, Gerighty mentioned Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption as another major influence. He emphasized how Red Dead Redemption creates a world that feels real, not merely a set of repetitive activities. Gerighty admired Ghost of Tsushima for its pure execution of a player fantasy, seamlessly integrating story, world, character, and gameplay to immerse gamers in the experience of being a samurai ninja in Japan. This compelling blend of elements served as a foundational guide for Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws is set to launch on August 30th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
